iPad mini用カバー「iPad mini Smart Cover」にある、カバーによるロック機構のためのマグネットセンサーが、iPad (4th generation)と違い、センサー数と位置が異なっています。

iPad miniでは、ホームボタン右横と右端の２ヶ所にロック機構用の四角いマグネットがあり、iPad mini Smart Coverには、同様の位置に四角いマグネットと丸いマグネットが入っています。

この２ヶ所が接近しないとロック機構は働きません。なお、丸いマグネットは多極着磁の可能性があります。

iPad mini Smart Cover自体のマグネット量は相当多く、カバーを裏側に回すと背面に軽くですが貼り付きます。

しかし、この場合は同じ位置関係にマグネットがあるにも関わらず、画面がロックしません。

New cover for iPad mini, "iPad mini Smart Cover" has different number of magnetic lock sensors, which are placed on different position from iPad (4th generation).

There are 2 square shaped magnets in iPad mini, one magnet is placed beside home-button and 2nd magnet is on the edge of right edge along home-button. And also, iPad mini Smart Cover has same magnets, but one magnet shaped squared.

When these magnets placed closer, iPad mini goes onto locked.

I notice iPad mini Smart Cover has another magnets. When iPad mini Smart Cover turned to backwards, cover sticks on back case of iPad mini slightly. In this situation, lock switching magnet is close, but iPad mini does not go lock.
